Beef Factory Prices
This week’s factory quotes sees beef prices continue to fall.
Cow and young bull prices were the worst impacted while prices for heifers (+1c) and bulls (+2c) increased slightly.
Bord Bia’s Cattle Price Dashboard shows that the Irish Beef Composite Price is now 40c/kg behind the export beef benchmark price, which is the largest price differential recorded in 2023.
Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) Tim Cullinan said that beef processors need to increase prices in order to reduce the unacceptable gap between prime Irish beef prices and prime export benchmark price.
Meanwhile, the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) chair Edmund Graham is also calling on beef processors to be held accountable on the price differential.
In response to the recent decline in beef factory prices, many beef farmers have opted to bring their animals to local marts.
The mart trade remains strong for forward-type and fleshed cattle with Carnaross Mart, Gortatlea Mart, Carnew Mart, and Drumshanbo Mart all holding higher prices relative to factories.
Farmers should try and resist lower price offers from factories to buy cattle and consider selling their livestock either through the mart or by advertising them online.
