Weekly Mart Prices
Mart prices continue to trend upward across the country this week across all classes of cattle. This is largely being driven by a continued increase in demand from buyers despite increased volumes of cattle. Bullocks (Steers) prices averaged €2.51/kg, Heifers €2.42/kg, PB Bulls & Suckler cows €3.61/kg, Dry Cows €2.35/kg, Weanling Bulls €2.35/kg, Weanling Heifers €2.35/kg and Calves €2.55/kg. Several reports are beginning to emerge that many dairy farmers have either begun or considered transitioning over to beef with the derogation limit due to reduce to 220kg/ha from 250kg/ha on January 1, 2024. A c.50% fall in milk prices falling from highs of 57c/l in 2022 to 33c/l, higher input costs and an increased need for additional land capacity in order to maintain the same dairy cattle numbers.
